We cannot have it both ways

Our country is in a hot mess these days, and because of selfishness and self-centeredness, I cannot see things drastically changing in the coming months. I believe in the Holy Scriptures and am very thankful that God is in control and Sovereign. But I also think that He is not very happy with us as a group of people right now.

First, I want to make it clear that I do not like or agree with all that is happening on our southern border. I understand that people want a better life in the United States, so they are willing to take extreme measures to leave their homeland and make the long and dangerous trek toward the good old USA. I think that separating children from their parents is wrong on many levels. In my own life, there is nothing like the bond I have with my children and grandchildren. This bond helps me to reason. The connection with my children causes me to make wise decisions. The choice of the parents fleeing their homelands and entering this country illegally forces our government to take drastic actions. This choice is a lose-lose situation for everyone.

I cannot help but think about this great nation that I love. I think about what made us a melting pot in the first place. I remember Social Studies and Civic classes that I had when I was in Junior High and High School and learning about Ellis Island and Angel Island at how people coming from many other countries would go through a stringent process to start their journey toward citizenship. I know that this must have been a great annoyance for those families who came to America with nothing but a desire to become a part of this great country. The point that I want to make in mentioning this is that these people went through the process. They took the necessary steps our government required and went through the process the right way.

Social media and 24-hour news cycles have a way of fuzzing up the truth. With the facts skewed, uninformed Americans on both sides of the isles gobble up news bites and spew unverified ignorance in their cultural circles. Unsubstantiated pictures and videos play into the frenzy and posturing take place and we the people of the United States go to our corners waiting for the bell to ring so that we can come out swinging at each other. There is a massive problem with handling difficulties this way. While we are fighting with each other, nothing changes. The problem remains, and we are no closer to finding a resolution to the underlying problem.

We need to work together as Americans to figure out a way to change the way we are processing people. We also need to do a better job of informing those who make the personal choice to enter our county illegally. They need to know and understand the ramifications of their actions. Proactive people develop processes to take care of potential problems.

What I am reading and hearing this morning is far from creating a working process. What I see this morning is the far left, the far right and the media utilizing the Holy Scripture for their gain. They are taking specific scriptures way out of context and bending the truth so that it fits into their political talking points. You cannot have it both ways! The left wants to use scripture to humanize the problem. The right wants to remove grace and make it a black and white and all about the law. The media wants to keep you tuned in as they keep the cycle alive by applying fodder and fuel. What needs to happen is that we as a people have to turn to God and repent. We need to repent from using the Bible as a convenient weapon. Politicians who are pro-choice are using Scripture to demonize the right in how they are treating these children in these processing centers while thousands of babies are aborted daily. Conservatives are utilizing scripture to shore up the decisions they are making but will quickly jettison the thought if opposition arises. The Media who for the most part are anti-Christian is using the story to sell ad space and move their agenda into the forefront.

The Bible teaches “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) We cannot pick and choose the parts of scripture that we like because it fits into our political leaning. I want to remind everyone this morning that it is by grace we are saved through faith. Our relationship with Christ changes us. We are to be kind and compassionate, and we are to be tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God, for Christ sake has forgiven us.

I want to encourage believers this morning not to get caught up in the rhetoric that those on the right or left are perpetuating. In stressful situations like this one, believer’s are to turn to God and the Word of God. There is a solution to the problem! So through prayer and seeking His face I believe that we can find a resolution, I think we can find a way. I would also encourage believers to start dialogue and question potential political candidates their views and view on the Word of God before pulling the lever in the voting booth. Educate yourself! Don’t blindly take the word of a politician or the media as truth.

I love you all!
