“Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”
Have you ever recited this little rhyme?
Many people have recited this rhyme and often tried to believe it to be true. There is only one little problem; words can really hurt. I believe that words are one of the most powerful forces on the planet. Sometimes the words that we choose hurt the people that we interact with.
As Christians…we really need to think before we speak. We need to consider others before spouting off.
Jesus left us two commands, He wanted us to love God with all our hearts and He wants us to love our neighbors as ourselves.
In the church today we see and witness all kinds of strife and discord because of words.
As a believer and Church leader…I have personally witnessed the anguish caused by hurtful words spoken with a mean spirit.
This should never happen!
God’s word is very clear on how we are to treat one another. He wants us to “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.”
We are to be like Jesus simply because this is who God wants us to be like.
Jesus in His earthly ministry never used words to hurt anyone.
We should carefully consider our words and always try and not use words to hurt those around us.
As believers we are called on to be tender and compassionate. We must remember that word’s can and do hurt!
Proverbs 16:27 says “A worthless man digs up evil, while his words are as a scorching fire.” We need to think clearly and carefully about the words we say to others. We must realize that words can and do hurt; they do have an impact.
So today think about the words you use when addressing others. Are they kind? Can the words you are using be misunderstood and taken as hurtful? Think…and then speak!
I love you all!
